"Youth Work"

While reading Wood, Westwood and Thompson, Introduction from Youth Work, I was able to have a better understanding of the youth work done in the modern years and how youth work was referred to almost a decade ago.

A quote that really stood out to me was "Youth workers can be heard describing their work with 'young offenders', 'teenage parents' and 'NEETs'.1 Despite the pressures from policy and the challenges of working in different agency contexts, using these labels to describe young people with whom we work should be resisted at all costs.". It brings us to reality that human beings choices don't take away from them being humans.

A new idea that appeared to me is how important it is to be appropriate involved with the children you work with. "Youth workers purposefully intervene in young people's lives, creating opportunities, activities and conversations that aim to enable young people to think, feel and act differently towards their social world.". Made a wonderful outline of the point of being involved and that is to make the youth think differently towards the social world. Another interesting point of the article that stood out to me was "Like all other human services, youth work is influenced by the social, political and economic context in which it operates, taking on different 'guises' according to 'varying conceptions of youth need' ". While reading this sentence this made me see a new perspective how the goal of many organizations may vary, and where the company/ organization rubric is.

principles, context, and practice skills, what do these words mean? "Principles are the fundamental theories of truths, or ethical guidelines that form the basis for a course of action. They represent the "why" behind what is done and serve as the foundation for reasoning and conduct.".

"Context is the set of situational factors, circumstances, and environment that shape how principles are applied. It acts as the "translating agent," determining how theoretical principles are adapted for a specific scenario.".

"Practice skills are the applied competencies and techniques necessary to carry out principles effectively within a given context. These are the "how" and "what" of putting knowledge into action.".

The voice of early childhood takes about a deep understanding on how language and choice of words matter in a Childs development. It can help them have a strong positive self-esteem while having clear expectations.
