Investing in Out of School Time

 OST

Out of school time is something all children and young adults need, Dr. Corinne McKamey & Dr. Victoria Restler do an amazing job of expressing that in their writing. They encouraged the thought for students to attend afterschool activities and programs, because after the COVID- 19 pandemic there has been a significant loss in the economy that has affected the educational and emotional state of all. I agree with Dr. Corinne McKamey & Dr. Victoria Restler, they have created this mission on helping Rhode Islanders to have a higher chance of completing high school and striving to earn a job while experiencing life-long helpful qualities from out of school spaces.
Before attending college my experiences as a high school student was during the COVID- 19 pandemic, my spaces were limited but fortunately there was an after school space I was able to attend to online during the lockdown of the United States. Once the COVID-19 cases were regulated I was able to attend OST space person. I was able to grow in my community, being able to meet with other students from other schools who were relating on the same struggles I was. The after school space I was attending was called Young Voices, this was a wonderful non-profit organization that allowed students to have a place to grow in their academical role as a young adult and to fight for educational rights. I am very blessed to have been able to be apart of an organization whose mission is to help young adults strive for a higher education and gain new experience in an out of school time environment.
A related article that touches upon the OST is PubMed Central, they speak about the importances of out of school spaces but focus on the outdoors aspect. They strive for students to gain experience in nature and learning while having fun. They have shown results of improvement in physical and mental health results while being outside. OST spaces can be done everywhere and have educational attributes and roles in young adults growth.
