Breathe - In the heights

In the Heights recorded a song called "Breathe", and in the song they depicted a scenario of a young latin American woman who has been given the opportunity to go out of her cultural bonds and education to pursue a better life. While being the first of many in her family to go out of family and cultural lay outs she found her self hiding who she is from the outside crowd. While being there she is going through a mental war of many questions on who she is, while at home she is seen as a "star" for what she has done and accomplished.  Nina is feeling the immense pressure on succeeding because she is "the one who made it", in her family and her neighborhood.  In the heights song Breathe, is something I resonate with especially coming from an immigrant household and being the first daughter in the family to attend college and pursue a career. At times I have heard my parents talk about me with my family members with such great pride and how I have been ...

The YDEV Curriculum: Asset-based Views

Questions 1. Why is this concept of the Deficit vs. Asset Model just now being brought up, or why did it take me this long to find out? Why isn't this being talked about more? Why do parents not know about the fight in planning that their children are in the middle of? This is the concept for pushing for the Asset model plans and having loving, caring, conscious parents who want to build up their children and their attributes.  2. After having researched that having an Asset model plan in schooling is efficient, all schools should be fighting for this plan, but would most likely stick to the Deficit plan that has been proven to show negative results in academic scores and negative outcomes for students' self-esteem and future. Why aren't more schools fighting for this plan? 3.Starting early matters! The article made a statement that shook me: "With these statistics, it is not surprising that success factors in middle school highly determine a student’s high school su...

Who am I?

Anti-Racist           While  reading Anti-Racist, this piece of writing has shifted my perspective of how my surroundings have affected my personal view of the world and of myself. This writing gave me a deeper understanding of how I come to be who I am.  When the  writer says, "You are made up of your family, your friends, your neighborhood, your school, what you see on social media and read in books, what you hear and listen to, what you eat, what you wear, what you feel, your dreams, the stories you cannot wait to share and those you don't want to tell and everything in between and all around." really opened my mind to realize that we are products of our surrounding, what we experience and see makes us who we are. Which in reality makes perfect sense but the book also talks about how you don't have to stay in the box that society has assigned you. You can make a choice to change and to not apologize for it!        ...

"Youth Work"

While reading  Wood, Westwood and Thompson , Introduction from Youth Work, I was able to have a better understanding of the youth work done in the modern years and how youth work was referred to almost a decade ago.          A quote  that really stood out to me was " Youth workers can be heard describing their work with 'young offenders', 'teenage parents' and 'NEETs'.1 Despite the pressures from policy and the challenges of working in different agency contexts, using these labels to describe young people with whom we work should be resisted at all costs.". It brings us to reality that human beings choices don't take away from them being humans.           A new idea that appeared to me is how important it is to be appropriate involved with the children you work with. " Youth workers purposefully intervene in young people's lives , c...

Investing in Out of School Time

OST          Out of school time is something all children and young adults need, Dr. Corinne McKamey & Dr. Victoria Restler do an amazing job of expressing that in their  writing. They encouraged the thought for students to attend afterschool activities and programs, because after the COVID- 19 pandemic there has been a significant loss in the economy that has affected the educational and emotional state of all. I agree with Dr. Corinne McKamey & Dr. Victoria Restler, they have created this mission on helping Rhode Islanders to have a higher chance of completing high school and striving to earn a job while experiencing life-long helpful qualities from out of school spaces.           Before attending college my experiences as a high school student was during the COVID- 19 pandemic, my  spaces were limited but fortunately there was an after school space I was able to attend to online during the lockdown of the ...
